We will be building the houses using ModCell, a company which has developed a low-carbon modern method of construction with straw and timber using super-insulated, prefabricated wall panels. Please do take a look at their site as it is full of great pictures of the ModCell panels being made. Below are some of their pictures showing the building process and then of the finished insides of the BaleHaus, a prototype house built by ModCell at Bath University.
The ModCell design
All the following photos were taken from the Modcell site are are included here to give you an idea of how it will work.
The walls of the houses will be built in a "flying factory" (a barn) as close to the site as possible. The wood is brought from the mill to Leeds for assembly into rectangular frames. We'll then buy the straw from a local farmer and make the bales at the correct density for filling up the frames.
